Street-legal notes for Iowa buyers

LSVs are federally defined under FMVSS No. 500 and are required to have equipment such as headlamps, turn signals, brake lights, mirrors, a DOT windshield, seatbelts, a VIN, and a maximum speed of 25 mph. Iowa allows LSV operation subject to state and local rules; conventional “golf carts” on city streets are separately governed by city ordinance under Iowa Code §321.247. Always confirm your city’s ordinance and road eligibility.

Range depends on factors such as battery capacity, terrain, passenger load, and temperature. Many dealers stock 105 Ah lithium packs that materially extend real-world range over legacy lead-acid carts.

Do I need a driver’s license or insurance?
For “golf carts” on city streets, Iowa Code §321.247 requires a valid driver’s license and typically limits use to sunrise–sunset per local ordinance. LSVs are considered motor vehicles; therefore, licensing and insurance requirements are governed by state rules. Check your city and insurer.
